Regulators are highly complex technical parts. In order to protect them from the ingress of water and dirt during storage when not in use, they are best sealed with a protective threaded cap after the dive. This protective cap also protects the regulator from the ingress of moisture when it is later washed out, which could lead to internal icing of the regulator during the next dive.
