Open Water Diver

With plenty of fun during the training, highly qualified and experienced diving instructors, and modern, reliable equipment, you can safely, comfortably, and joyfully take your first steps into your diving adventure with us. Come and join us! Its easier than you think!

General Information

The Open Water Diver certificate is your diving license and marks the entry into the adventure of diving.

During the course, you will learn the essential theoretical and practical foundations and then demonstrate your skills under real conditions in open water. Afterwards, as a trained Open Water Diver, you are allowed to dive „on your own“ to a depth of up to 18 meters with other trained divers.

How does the course work?

The course includes:

  • 6 theory units in self-study (with a final test), followed by a review in a theory unit at the dive centre with the diving instructor – see the IMPORTANT information regarding theoretical training below.
  • 3 afternoons or evenings in the pool
  • 2 days over the weekend at the lake with 4 dives

At the very start of the practical training, each participant will receive appropriate equipment from us. This includes wetsuit, regulator, buoyancy jacket, and weights. ABC equipment, i.e., mask, snorkel, and fins, must be brought by each course participant. The equipment usually remains with the respective course participant until the end of the training, allowing you to get accustomed to the equipment and its care and handling. Of course, our diving instructors and staff are on hand to assist you with advice and support.

Filled compressed air cylinders will be provided to you before each diving day right here at the dive centre.

Our special service for your safety

You will learn to dive with one of our diving instructors in small groups. Unlike many other diving schools, which allow 8 dive students at once underwater (with only one instructor), we operate with a maximum of 4 dive students per instructor. And if an exercise doesnt work out on the first try, we will have time at the end of the day to add an extra dive.

Our philosophy for a successful diving course is that by the end, you not only hold a certificate in your hands but also that you learn the hobby of „diving“ properlywith joy, safety, comfort, and enough time to internalise the important rules and techniques sustainably! We want to send each student into the underwater world with a clear conscience.

Where does what take place?

For the theory, we will meet directly at our diving school in Ilsfeld.
The first dives in the pool will take place in the indoor swimming pool in Kornwestheim or in the outdoor swimming pool in Heilbronn (depending on the season).
The open water dives will take place at a lake approximately 100 km away. Each course participant must organise their own travel. Please remember to pack all your equipment and collect full compressed air cylinders from the dive centre in good time before your journey.

What do you need to bring?

  • ABC equipment (mask, snorkel, booties, fins) and possibly neoprene gloves (depending on the season and personal sensitivity to cold). For hygiene and the necessary perfect fit, we cannot provide this equipment as a rental. Of course, we are happy to advise youour dive shop has a wide selection of high-quality masks, snorkels, and fins, and we are sure to find the right one for everyone!
  • Completed medical questionnaire or medical certificatesee information on diving fitness below
  • Writing utensils
  • Towel and swimwear
  • For the open water dives: food and plenty of drinks, as well as weather-appropriate clothing (consider that diving can cool you down quickly, and a warm jumper can make sense even in warm weather)
  • The equipment and air cylinders provided by us, which you collect from the dive centre before the trip.

What is included in the course price?

  • All theory units including unlocking access for self-study
  • 3 pool sessions and 4 open water dives, conducted by a qualified diving instructor
  • Completion certificate
  • Rental equipment (wetsuit, buoyancy jacket, regulator, air cylinder, weights)
  • Cylinder fills
  • Diving logbook
  • Processing fees.

What are the course prerequisites?

  • Minimum age 14 years
  • Diving fitness – to be proven in the form of a medical questionnaire or medical certificate – see information on diving fitness below.

What happens after the course?

First of all, you can naturally go diving with a buddy or, if you dont have a buddy, participate in our diving trips.
Additionally, you are welcome to attend advanced courses to expand your skills.

Diving fitness certificate

To participate in a diving course, it is essential that you are in good health. Although certain health constraints do not fundamentally exclude diving, they should be assessed by a doctor beforehand. To prevent diving accidents, it is required that you submit a certificate of your diving fitness before the course. This can be in the form of a medical questionnaire or a medical certificate.

You can download the medical questionnaire here on our website and fill it out independently. The completion is at your own responsibility and must be signed by you. The certificate is valid for one year from the date of issue or until your health condition changes (whichever comes first). If you have to answer „yes“ to any question on the questionnaire, it may be necessary for you to obtain an additional medical certificate. A detailed guide on completing the questionnaire can be found directly on the documentplease pay particular attention to the notes in the fine print at the end of the form!

We recommend providing a medical certificate and that you regularly undergo a diving fitness examination for your own safety. According to the society for diving and hyperbaric medicine, divers aged 8 to 15 years and 40 years and older should annually undergo a diving medical examination. Divers between 16 and 39 years should have an examination every three years or if there are changes in health status.

IMPORTANT!

The theory units in the classroom and before each dive serve only as a review of the theory learned in self-study. The courses are designed such that in the theory sessions with the diving instructor, only the most important aspects are discussed again, and any questions are clarified.
Please prepare well for the theory units in advance!

You can learn the theory through the myssi homepage (.) or the myssi app. You will receive access once you have filled out and returned the important documents attached.
