In scuba diving, diving cylinders with capacities of 10 to 15 liters are typically used to carry breathing gases. Safety-conscious divers use twin sets to have two independent systems underwater. But what are 3-liter diving cylinders for? The spread of technical diving has led to these small diving cylinders being used in essentially two ways. Firstly, they are used as storage cylinders for argon to fill the dry suit with argon. Argon has only 1/5 the thermal conductivity of air. Filling the dry suit with argon creates a cozy feeling of warmth.

The use of 3-liter diving cylinders is also found in rebreathers as oxygen cylinders or as diluent gas cylinders. The spread of rebreathers is leading to an increasing demand for these small diving cylinders.
