Seamless steel cylinders are used as pressure vessels for a wide range of applications. Diving cylinders with an 18-liter capacity are, alongside the 20-liter diving cylinder, the first choice for dive guides and diving instructors on dive bases and dive boats. The average recreational diver might argue that this cylinder is too large. However, when the dive guide needs to supply air to a diver, the cylinder cannot be large enough. The 18-liter diving cylinder has the advantage of being approximately 6.0cm shorter than the twenty-liter diving cylinder. This prevents divers with short upper bodies from bumping their heads on the valve during the dive.

The main applications are for storage, pressure buffering, and the transport of compressed gases.
